8th Grade Science Class Syllabus

Course Description:  During this school year, students will be exploring and investigating many different areas of science including forces, waves. places in the universe, geologic forces and biological change. 

  

 To supplement these units, students will be participating in science labs as well as projects/presentations throughout the course. Students will participate in a lab safety course within the first two weeks of school and will need a lab safety contract signed by a parent/guardian before they are allowed to conduct any labs.  

Our instructional strategies are designed to help your student achieve the following: 

  • build a solid science vocabulary
  • gain a strong understanding of key scientific principles and topics
  • learn how to use mathematics to tackle scientific problems
  • find out about the latest technologies in the field of science
  • see how science is related to other disciplines
  • develop thinking skills and the ability to challenge assumptions, think creatively, and solve real-life problems

The Units covered this year in science include: 

Physical Science

      Motion and Stability: Forces and Interactions


  • Motion (Speed, Acceleration, Velocity, Motion Maps)
  • Contact and Non-Contact Forces
  • Newton’s Laws
  • Magnetism and Electricity 

      Waves and Their Applications in Technologies for Information Transfer 


  • Basic Wave Properties (frequency, amplitude, wavelength, and speed)
  • Mechanical and Electromagnetic Wave behaviors  

(refraction,reflection,transmission and absorption)

  • Roles waves play in different communication systems 

(telescopes, spectroscopes, satellites and space probes)






Life Science - Biological Change: Unity and Diversity

 
  • Fossil record
  • Common ancestry patterns
  • Adaptations and Natural Selection
  • Bioengineering

 

Earth and Space Sciences - Earth’s Systems

  • Formation of the Universe
  • Earthquakes, Volcanoes
  • Plate Tectonics
  • The Rock Cycle

  • Tests - 40%
  • Quizzes/Projects - 40%
  • Classwork - 20%
